Rolling out 6 iPhones to a department at work. We bought these cases. They are excellent. It's like body armor for the iPhone 4. Not completely waterproof, definitely water resistant. The iPhone sits inside a virtually fully enclosed plastic shell. Around that wraps a thick spongy silicone rubber case. The sleek iPhone ends up fairly chunky, but it is unlikely to get damaged and that's the point.
The entire front including front camera is covered by a hard plastic sheet which doesn't impair touch function at all. Gaming is fine with this case. The rear camera is not covered by plastic. However, the rear camera is very well sealed by a rubber flap. Sealed so well it is a bit tricky to get open. But the protection is excellent.
The cover for the charging dock, mute slide switch head phone port are a more forgiving to open and they don't really get in your way. The cover for the charging dock is perforated so as not to interfere with the speakers and indeed it does not.
The other buttons have no slide, they work through the spongy rubber covering just fine. Other than a little work to get the camera cover open there is zero effect on functionality with this case.
So in summary it is not waterproof but would certainly stand up to a brief pass through a lawn sprinkler, and unless you backed over your iPhone with your car or dropped a cinder block on it, makes the precious practically invulnerable to damage. For under $40.
UPDATE - A year later, We are buying iPhone 4S and I'm buying more of these cases. I dropped a star from my earlier review because after using it myself and watching it be used for a bunch of months, I too have discovered these design problems:
Useless clip gets discarded and phone goes in your pocket. Not an issue except the home button is always getting pressed in your pocket and voice activation will come on, hear some noise and iPhone will often say from your pocket "Calling <old business contact you no longer wish to speak to>". That gets really aggravating really fast. Best solution though is for Apple to fix voice control so it doesn't work from the lock screen.
Hard to get some chunky audio plugs into the headphone port. Earbuds all seem to work fine. I have a problem with some headphones and most audio adapter cables. Just have to find the rarer ones with slim plugs.
Won't work with any dock. We don't use docks but that would annoy me badly if I did. It's hard to get the iPhone out of this case - you wouldn't want to do it often for docking. Maybe there is a dock adapter cable of some kind.
It's hard but not impossible to touch the very outer edges of the iphone screen.
After some months the case screen can get pretty scratched up. It's not removable nor replaceable. Time for a new case. But at least the iPhone screen is still pristine.
Same issue with the rubber flaps. They eventually will tear off. Time for a new case if that bothers you.
So worst-case (ouch) it's about $20 about every year for a chunky case that prevents nearly any damage. You'll either love it or hate it. For me, I use my iPhone as hiking and biking GPS, I take it camping, play music in the car and on the boat, it sits near the stove showing recipes while I cook, it's my news reader in the john, it's mainly in my jeans pocket, I'm often clumsy with it... I've dropped it, kicked it, bounced it across the room, had it fall off my bike several times, dropped it down the side of a trail once, dropped things on it, had water splashed on it, it fell off the trunk lid of my car twice... zero harm done. For me this case is a necessity.
